This year’s birthday has been one of my favorites yet. I speak as if it’s ongoing, because in my family we celebrate the birthday month. In place of one big blowout bash, we’ll usually do small get togethers with friends and family throughout the month.

To kick-off my 29 days of celebrating 29 years, Andrew and I took a trip down to LA. Surprisingly, LA is new territory for us. I usually only go for work and Andrew had never been. We stayed at the Beverly Hilton and focused most of our visit on the surrounding area, with a few pit stops in Santa Monica and Downtown LA. The Grammys were taking place that weekend, and our hotel was actually hosting Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party. The energy was high and it was kind of fun to spot celebrities around as this is a rarity in San Francisco.

We’re basically becoming pros at packing as much as possible into a weekend getaway (see DC Trip), and LA was no exception. A few of our favorites places on our visit were: Runyon Canyon, Mr. Chow’s, Wally’s in Beverly Hills, Craig’s for the cocktails, and shopping in West Hollywood. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

These pants are my new obsession! As a short-ish chic, I usually shy away from anything long and wide-legged. But I got a little brave, decided to try on these pants at Nordstrom, and instantly fell in love. With the right platform shoe (becoming hugely popular this season btw), these pants fit perfect. And nothing says Birthday/Valentine’s weekend in LA, like a sweet little off the shoulder blush top.

Oftentimes I’ll find myself running out for a quick errand in the afternoon which turns into an excursion lasting through the evening. This seems to happen more often near the Holiday season when our to-do lists get longer, and the days get shorter.

On days like these, I usually put on the first thing I see in my closet and head out the door. I feel in love with this long plaid top because it is the perfect thing to throw on when you want to elevate the style factor of your look, while still keeping warm.

Another reason I love tops like these is because they’re ideal for traveling. When I pack for trips, I usually focus on basics like black tanks and leggings with a few layering pieces. This top is perfect for just that when traveling in the Fall.

A DC Adventure – Part II

Today, I’m excited to share with you the rest of our incredible trip to DC!

Keeping pace with the start of our short trip, we ran through the rest of our checklist at lightning speed.

Our Saturday evening started with dinner at DBGB in the city center. This was by far my favorite meal of the entire trip and the atmosphere was just perfect – energetic yet still romantic. I loved that the restaurant was in the City Center because that area reminds me of a little piece of San Francisco right in the middle of DC.

Following dinner we changed into more comfortable clothes and took off on a night tour of the monuments. We walked all the way from our hotel in Georgetown to the White House, Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, and finally the Lincoln Memorial (and of course everywhere in between).

The Eisenhower Executive Office Building – Again this architecture is on point!
The Washington Monument – A shining beacon in the middle of DC.

Great quote in the World War II memorial. I think they were on to something ;).
The amazing Lincoln Memorial
Visiting the Lincoln Memorial was the thing I looked forward to the most because he is my personal favorite president for many reasons, and we just so happen to share the same birthday!
I’m so glad we opted for viewing these monuments late at night because we were able to get quiet, uninterrupted views. The gravity of these installations seemed to weigh even more heavily at night. We must have sat on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for over an hour hanging out and taking in the view of the Washington monument over the Reflecting pool.

On my final day in DC, we packed in even more museums, this time opting for The International Spy Museum, the Smithsonian American History museum, and the Aerospace Museum. Each spot was incredible in it’s own way, but I have to say that The Spy Museum was definitely the most fun. Let’s just say, if you’ve had aspirations of being a “Bond Girl” (like me), you will have hours of entertainment in this museum.

Finally, the trip wouldn’t been complete without a stop at DuPont Circle. We grabbed spots on the patio outside of DuPont bar and enjoyed what must have been one of the prettiest days in DC all year.

The fountain at DuPont Cirlce
Visiting DC reminded me of how important it is to take every opportunity to travel and gain deepened appreciation for the world around you. The more I travel, the more I realize this little Oklahoma girl has so much more to learn about this world, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.

Now to plan our next trip – any suggestions on where to go?!

Is it possible to make a “New Year’s” Resolution in the middle of the year?! If so, I’m 100% on board. At the start of the Summer I resolved to take every opportunity to travel. While this may be easier to proclaim in the Summer months, I do intend to hold true to this as long as possible – whether a long haul trip or a weekend jaunt.

This weekend, I finally had the opportunity to visit Washington D.C. Andrew had to do some work in “The City” and I decided to join for a few days!

After taking the Thursday night redeye (the BEST way to fly there), we checked into the truly fabulous Melrose Hotel in Georgetown. With only 3 days in DC and SO much to see, we seriously packed each day to the brim.

Today I’m sharing a few pictures from Friday and the 1st half of Saturday’s adventures.

Friday was mostly spent shopping in adorable Georgetown. I’ve always heard about what a cute little area this is, but was completely blown away. I could definitely envision myself cozying up in one of these houses, walking the cobblestone streets with my family, and living the DC life! And, the shopping was just as great.

The other great thing about DC – the food! We grabbed Happy Hour at Martin’s Tavern, where JFK proposed to Jackie O, and people watched. This was soon followed by dinner at the incredible, spanish tapas restaurant, Jaleowith an old friend. We rounded out the evening with a nightcap at Old Ebbitt Grill, which looked every bit a classic, politician-filled DC restaurant.

Saturday was our day to pack in as much as possible (hence why I’m only sharing part of it in this post).

Outside the National Gallery of Art

While I would have loved to visit all of the Smithsonians during our trip (virtually impossible), I chose a few must-see’s and did an abbreviated tour of each. We started with the National Museum of Natural History, because I HAD to see the dinosaurs (weird obsession), and then made our way to the National Gallery of Art, and the Newseum. The Newseum is by far the best museum I’ve ever been to in my life – definitely check it out if you ever find yourself in DC!

Portions of the Berlin Wall in the Newseum
In between popping in and out of museums, we walked through DC admiring the incredible architecture of the rich history of what some of the buildings represent. I was truly in awe and, of course, pictures just cannot do it justice.

To celebrate my recent birthday and Valentine’s day, Andrew and I took a trip across the Golden Gate bridge to Napa. It’s a rarity that we take advantage of this beautiful countryside essentially right in our backyard. What a perfect weekend to visit. The sun-kissed, rolling hills were dotted with bare vines ready for this Spring’s blossoms. While the harvest in October is usually a busy time here, visiting during the “off-season” allowed us 1st class access to some of Napa’s best wineries.

Our visit was short, but sweet for sure. From the moment we checked in at the Silverado Resort, & Spa we were greeted with near 80 degree weather and bottle of cabernet to prime our palettes. Then, we were off to our 1st tasting at William Hill Estates, followed by spa treatments back at Silverado. The evening was capped off by the most amazing dinner at Torc – a must-try if you make your way to Napa! The next day, we grabbed a leisurely brunch at Brix over-looking their pristine gardens. The waiter even brought by small bunches of tulips to each of the tables! I’ve never had a more perfect brunch in my life.

We rounded out our visit with a private tour of Kenzo Estate, saving the best for last! After driving uphill for what seems like an eternity, you finally arrive at the grand gates of Kenzo, and then you drive some more! When you finally arrive at the estate, you feel as if you’ve transcended into an entirely new territory. There is a sense of calmness and serenity at the estate that is no doubt infused by Japanese culture at the root of the winery. All in all, it was an incredible trip and I’m already looking forward to my next weekend jaunt up to wine country!
